While I understand on an intellectual level that most people think that change is fun, especially when we're talking about a game that's been the same for years and years, I wish people would understand that for me, it's a reason to stop playing the game.

I do not like new. I like familiar.

I do not have fun with new. I have fun with familiar. The first time through anything new, no matter how "fun" it's supposed to be, is absolute hell. For most people, it's the best thing in the world.

I'm a creature of habit. I like doing the same things in the same way over and over again. For me, that is fun. I understand on an intellectual level that for most people, that is boring. Perhaps I'm a Terry Pratchett character - the wizard Rincewind who spent his life searching for boredom, because boredom was safe without surprises. To me that sounds wonderful. To most people I guess it sounds like hell.

But what's happened now, with Blizzard Entertainment's changes to World of Warcraft - most people think that's amazing and great. I've been hearing my partners enthuse over it for months, and been shutting my ears to it because I guess I kept hoping it wouldn't happen, that they'd decide not to do it to the game I'd come to love because it was fun and familiar.

So much for that.

I'm pissed off. I'm not going to cancel my account, but until this game becomes familiar again, I'm not going to enjoy playing. I know I will eventually enjoy playing it, but that isn't going to be today, or next week, or even next month. It's all new and unfamiliar, and I want my old game back.

What frustrates me more than anything is that nobody in my life seems to understand that.

I personally don't dislike new things so much as I hate having things I like being taken from me. I played FFXI for 4-5 years, and the Vana'diel I knew is just gone; the people I knew are mostly gone, the seasonal events I used to love are ignored, the crowd of excited newbies I used to be a part of has thinned down to a core of driven endgame players. And with the level cap being constantly bumped upwards, the level 75 character I spent ages grinding is no longer adequate, and I'll have to buy like $30 worth of DLC to get back into the game.

The trouble with online games is that even if the old content is still accessible, no one you know wants to play through it anymore. They've all moved on to the new hotness, whether you like it or not. And while Cataclysm was probably necessary to bring the game up to date, it just made things worse by disappearing a lot of places that people have good memories of. I've played WoW too, and I'm kind of sad about it myself.

I'm sorry, and I hope you feel better soon.
